2009 Stimulus Check Scam
Wednesday, January 28, 2009 4:23I was reading about last years stimulus check and came across an article by Luke Mullins, writing for U.S. News, which described what fraudsters were getting up to to try and obtain private personal information.
Having seen this I thought it would be worth adding a warning relating to the 2009 stimulus check. If the scammers did it last year it’s sensible to assume they’ll try it again this year.
The 2008 warning came from the FBI and the scam involved the mass sending of emails titled “Economic Stimulus Tax Refund” and the email appeared to come from the IRS but actually didn’t.
The email suggested that the IRS’s records showed that the recipient was entitled to receive a stimulus check and that in order to do so, they needed to click on a link and fill out a form which inluded a request for bank account details of the recipient.
Be warned! If you receive a similiar email with regard to your 2009 stimulus check, do not click on the link.
